The Division of Pediatric Radiology at Children's Hospital of Illinois focuses on the care of infants, children and adolescents through the diagnosis of disease by various imaging techniques. The division has 3 fellowship-trained pediatric radiologists. All three are board-certified by the American Board of Radiology (ABR) and all hold CAQs (certificates of additional qualification) from the ABR in the subspecialty of pediatric radiology. All imaging is performed with state-of-the-art equipment including Philips iU22 ultrasound units, GE Lightspeed VCT 64-slice CT scanners using low-dose protocols recommended by the SPR (Society for Pediatric Radiology), GE Signa HDxt 1.5 and 3.0 Tesla MR scanners, a Philips EasyDiagnost Eleva low-dose pulsed fluoroscopy unit, as well as modern nuclear medicine gamma cameras and interventional radiology suites.  A new digital fluoroscopy suite also allows for the lowest possible dose. We have a dedicated  child life specialist  who works closely with the pediatric radiologists and technologists. Child life specialists are trained professionals with expertise in helping children and their families overcome life’s most challenging events.

All aspects of pediatric imaging are performed, including:

  • General radiology
  • GI/GU fluoroscopic exams
  • Magnetic Resonance Imaging
  • Computed Tomography
  • Ultrasound
  • Nuclear medicine
  • Pediatric neuroimaging
  • Pediatric neurointerventional
  • Peripheral vascular imaging
  • Pediatric interventional
    • Vascular access
    • Drainage catheter placement
    • Cecostomy tube placement
    • GI tube placement
  • Mammography

The exams are performed by pediatric radiologists and dedicated technologists experienced in working with children. The exams are closely monitored by the pediatric radiologists to assure optimal quality. The pediatric radiologists have all taken a pledge, the Image Gently Pledge. This pledge is an initiation of the Alliance for Radiation Safety in Pediatric Radiology based on the ALARA concept (ALARA, as low as reasonably achievable) to use the lowest amount of radiation as reasonably achievable in performing our diagnostic exams.

Any questions regarding what imaging study to order or how studies are to be performed are welcome. To contact a pediatric radiologist, please call the Physician Access Line at 1 (800) 231-7257.

Neuroradiology

A full complement of services is provided through Central Illinois Radiology Associates. These services include:

  • Cranial and spinal angiography
  • Computerized tomography
  • Interventional neuroradiology
  • Magnetic resonance imaging
  • Neuroradiologists
  • Nuclear medicine sonography

Thanks to the Telemedicine Project for Neurosciences, our physicians can review films and discuss pain management with referring physicians. If it is determined the patient needs to be transferred to OSF Children's Hospital of Illinois, transport arrangements are made.
