Child Life Services
Our Child Life specialists are specially trained to help children and their families better understand illness, hospitalization and outpatient procedures. Research shows that children who know what to expect are better able to cope with the stress of hospitalization. These specialists help decrease stress and anxiety related to procedures and the separation from home and family and the changes in routines.
Our specialists engage in the following to activities to prepare your child:
- Pre-operative tours
- Developmental play
- Procedure support
- Medical Play (allows children to interact with medical instruments)
- Special support for patients and siblings
The specialists provide continued care while your child is in the hospital. They supervise safe, age appropriate and child-friendly activity rooms located on both all inpatient units, as well as surgery.
Members of the Child Life team also manage holiday activities for patients and arranges the school, civic and celebrity tours that visit the hospital to meet the children.
Patient care doesn’t stop when your patient is discharged. We know that recovery after your hospital stay is very important, so our Child Life specialists help patients adjust to school after hospitalization by working collaboratively with school staff and other medical staff to ease that transition.
